Sometimes we are fortunate to receive the unwanted carcasses of dead animals. We are interested in understanding more about mitochondria in all types of animals. Cold blooded reptiles have a different way of managing energy and we'd like to see how this might be reflected in their mitochondria. We were not really fully prepared to receive 19 frozen pythons but when there is the possibility of doing such interesting studies there is no way that we can let the precious tissues go to waste!

These are the people currently doing the experiments. Amelia is interested in mitochondrial proteomics and lipidomics. Oliver is working on the mitochondrial haemoglobin story. Freya is working on everything - but mostly looking at mitochondrial haemoglobin in Parkinson's Disease and Catherine is elucidating the function of Equine Cyp450 enzymes.

Visit to Otley to see some bats, many thanks to Maggie Brown. We saw lots of Pipistrelles and a couple of Noctule bats. One species of bat, the Brandt's bat, has an incredible lifespan for such a small mammal - upto 41 years! http://www.nature.com/ncomms/2013/130820/ncomms3212/full/ncomms3212.html
